Bringing Hope to the Pediatric World of Cancer

Mothers Against Cancer (M.A.C.) is a non-profit registered charity (501c3), made up of volunteer mothers from the Kingwood (Houston suburb) area. The goal of M.A.C. is to raise children's cancer research funds specifically for the cancer unit at Texas Children's Hospital Cancer Center.

How We Got Started
Just after Christmas in 1984, precious two-year-old Ann Denman lost her battle against cancer. Maggie LaBove and Nancy Dillard, friends of Ann’s parents, Trey and Sally Denman, pondered for several years what could be done in Ann’s memory that would make a difference. In 1989, they gathered a group of close friends together and decided that a luncheon to raise funds for pediatric cancer research would be a fitting memorial.

Over three million dollars later, Mothers Against Cancer continues to be a leader in funding childhood cancer research at Texas Children’s Hospital Cancer Center. This group is a registered non-profit organization, composed of dedicated volunteer women whose primary goal is to raise funds for the research necessary to lead to a cure for all forms of childhood cancer … all because of the love for little Ann.

Upcoming Events
Mothers Against Cancer is thrilled to announce our new secondary fundraiser.  Sometime in October, we are going to host the first Virginia Gandy Fun Run where all proceeds benefit Mothers Against Cancer.  Many more details to follow.  We are honored that the Gandy family is allowing us to remember Virginia in such a great way.  This Fun Run will involve the entire community and will allow kids from TCCC and our community to be involved.  Kids and Virginia go hand in hand.

A Word from the Director of Texas Children’s Cancer Center, David G. Poplack, M.D.

At Texas Children’s Cancer Center, we are reminded each day that the small gestures and kindness’ extended to the patients and families treated here often become the foundation for great things. Mothers Against Cancer, a registered non-profit organization, began in 1989 in response to the death of a friend’s child. A luncheon was hosted in honor of that child and $9,300 was raised for research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Since that impressive beginning, Mothers Against Cancer has raised almost 4 million dollars to support research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Mothers Against Cancer is unique, there are no paid employees so every penny of the money raised goes directly to research.
